The song Baleleng is one of the most famous folk song in the Philippines. Though majority or almost all is familiar with the tune of the song, no one exactly knew the message behind the lyrics. This is because the original language behind the song is unfamiliar.
The Baleleng song is Tausug in Origin according to Lolo Mao. The song's original writer and composer is unknown since the song has been passed by way of tongue particularly the tune from province to province with the original lyrics being altered. Local and national artists created a sensible Visayan and Tagalog Lyrics of the song which gained great popularity.
The love song Beleleng is a story on a perspective for a young man bidding goodbye for his lovely maiden locally called "Leleng" (my dear) as Frauline in Berlin or Senorita to Mexico. The "Ba" was supposed to be a word which is placed after every question phrase in the local dialect (eg. Magaling ka ba? or Are you good?;Naintindihan mo ba? or Did you understand?)however mistakenly added to Leleng which famously became Baleleng.
The song is has a bittersweet story of a young male lover describing his anxiety in a poetic manner to his girl as he was going to war. There is a huge probability that the man is defending his hometown as his lines was that he will follow the girl even that far instead of saying I will be back.

These are the original lines of remorse by the lover (with spacing of the words placed sensibly):
I
Mutya ka ba Leleng? Sa katahom
Timgas pa sa puti nga baybayon
Sa kasingkasing ka panganduyon
Perlas ka nga angay gyud angkonon
II
Pila na ba Leleng? Layu-layu?
Si Tangkay ba Leleng? Pa Sibutu ?
Bang 'kaw bunal ba Leleng matuyo
Urul kaw ba Leleng pama layu
III
Kon ikaw ba Leleng ay mawala
Kon ikaw ba Leleng di ko makita
Gugma ko ba Leleng magahulat
Taliwala 'ning lawod sa mga luha
Transcription in English (line by line):
I
Are you a gem of splendor my dear?
More enduring like the white sand onshore
You will be yearned in my heart
And a pearl to be owned
II
How far is the distance my dear?
Sitangkai to Sibutu (and Island distant from Sulu)
If you my dear insist,
I'll follow you my my dear even that far...
III
If you my dear is gone
If you my dear I cannot find
My love my dear will be waiting
In the middle of these ocean of tears...

ReplyDeletewhen discovered the baleleng song?
ReplyDeleteMax Surban popularized this song in the 1980's or was it 90's. It was a big hit back then.
ReplyDeleteAnd also Roel Cortez had a Tagalog version of Baleleng.
DeleteI don't know of any singer or composer, for that matter, who made this song before Max Surban.
ReplyDeleteIt was max surban who wrote the song not some unknown writer, and ba in visayan and even in many local Muslim tribe is not phrase as magaling ka ba? Rather it's a phrase of affirmation like "oo nga no?" or "diba?," depending on who's giving question or the one answering
ReplyDeleteThis is not written in Tausug. Most part are in Cebuan. One stanza is of Sama Language. None is Tausug. The stanza reads:
ReplyDelete"Pila na ba Leleng layu-layu
Sitangkai ba Leleng, pa-Sibutu?
Bangkau-bunal ba Leleng matuyo
Urol kaw ba Leleng pama layu"
Sitangkai, Sibuto, and Bangkau-bunal are names of islands you cxan find in Tawi-tawi group of islands. Layo-layo means very far, refers to Tawi-tawi that also means "very far" derived from Malay word hawi which means "far"
Bangkau-bunal ba Leleng matuyo means if you persist, my love. Urol kaw ba Leleng pama layu means Follow me even from a far. I'm from Jolo Sulu and my parents are both Tausug. :)

DeleteUr right this had been passed from province to province and had been altered esp max surban to make shorter and simple that makes this song very around the world. Thanks
DeleteCorrection very famous around the world
DeleteI really appreciate the info. Thanks a lot. Nice to know the history of this song and it really has gain a lot of rendition. But what I'm searching for is the Tausug version of this. Since this was already translated to bisaya. Do you have it?
Deleteba is hon/honey/love and endearing form of calling someone so close. ba leleng = my love leleng/hon leleng.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the info.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice song...been hearing it but unknown to its meaning.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the infirmation...now I really appreciate this nice and lovely song...in can also be a Patriotic song.❤
I guess you have the wrong interpretation on its title 'Ba Leleng'. Its actually 'Baleleng' and not 'Ba Leleng?'.
ReplyDeleteSO it its first line mutya ka Baleleng sa katahom means "You are amazingly beautiful Baleleng" without question mark.
Wow just knew the meaning of this nice song
ReplyDeleteVery Nice:)
ReplyDeletetry to listen the rendition of juan paasa - baleleng
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I am enlightened to your translation and also by the comments. We may have different interpretation but one thing I'm sure is this person's longing for his lover.so sad
ReplyDeleteWhat is important we got the innermost meaning of the song. Language barrier
ReplyDeleteCheck out Juan Paasa covered Baleleng
ReplyDelete"Ba" i think was not placed by accident.
ReplyDeletei.e.
In tagalog we say: Sya cge alis na tayo. Parang napilitan.
In bisaya: Ba cge mangadto na ta.
Yung "Sya" sa tagalog katumbas ay "Ba" sa bisaya.
Maybe combining "Ba" and "Leleng" was by accident or intentional. Baleleng seems sound better.
ReplyDeleteNice:)
ReplyDeleteAmazing song.
ReplyDeleteSad it was mangled by senselessly putting the Ba before Leleng.
The song should have been entitle simply Leleng.
You are right. It should be simply Leleng. :)
DeleteEntitled
ReplyDeleteActually yung Words na "Sitangkay" at "sibutu" ay isang lugar sa Tawi-Tawi province malapit na sa sandakan Malaysi
